When you live in New York City and need to donate furniture, there are many excellent organizations and charities you can choose from. Since many city residents don't have a vehicle, finding organizations that will pick up your donations is especially useful.

New York City Furniture Donation With Pickup

There are many charitable organizations in New York City and the boroughs that welcome donations of furniture and will pick it up for you.

Angel Street Thrift Shop

This thrift shop on 17th Street in New York City raises funds to support substance abuse, HIV/AIDS and mental health programs, as well as the Bridge2Life Camp & Charles Evans Kids Club and the Pregnant Women & Infants Program. They provide a free pickup service that covers the greater New York and Tri-State Area. You can call 212-229-0546 extension 2 to schedule a pickup. They take furniture in good condition for sale in the thrift shops.

City Opera Thrift Shop

Donations to the City Opera Thrift Shop support the arts in New York City. They will pick up furniture although there's a five to seven day waiting period and generally they can pick up between 8 am and 2 pm on Monday through Friday. Furniture must be good condition and ready for resale in the thrift shop. They cannot take metal office furniture, futons, beds including mattresses and frames, plastic or formica furniture, and baby furniture.

Habitat for Humanity ReStore

Habitat operates the ReStore, a thrift shop that specializes in selling items for the home. This includes everything from building materials, appliances to furniture. If you have used furniture that is in good condition, you can email pictures of your items to restore@habitatnyc.org. You should review their list of requirements prior to sending your photos. They will respond within 48 hours and if they will accept your donation, you can arrange for the pick up within the five bouroughs at that time.

Hour Children

Hour Children provides services to children and families where the mother has been incarcerated and cannot care for them. They operate three thrift shops to raise funds for the organization, and they are located in Astoria and Long Island City. They will pick up furniture and other large items for free by calling 718-433-4724. They cannot take recliners, futons, bed frames and mattresses and bookcases.

Housing Works Thrift Shops

These upscale thrift shops raise money for homeless women, men and children that are HIV positive. They will only pick up furniture within the five boroughs that is in excellent condition and is ready for immediate resale in their stores. They have a detailed list of furniture they will not take on their website, including furniture from Ikea, office furniture, and media stands that are made for obsolete technology.

Junkluggers of New York City

Junkluggers provides professional junk removal for a fee throughout New York City, the boroughs, and the greater New York area. They will go through all of your items and donate anything usable to charities that take furniture, as well as clothing, electronics and other household items. They will also send a tax deductible receipt to you for anything that is donated. Some of their charity partners include the Alliance Against Homelessness, Goodwill Industries and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.

The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army operates several thrift shops around New York City and the boroughs. The Salvation Army provides a wide variety of services across the country for disaster relief, food pantries, alcohol and drug rehabilitation, job training and more.

United Jewish Council of the East Side

The Vintage Thrift shop is run by the United Jewish Council of the East Side, which provides a variety of services for youth, seniors and immigrants. They will take furniture in good condition for sale in the thrift shop and can arrange for pickup service in Manhattan. They will not take donations of bed frames and mattresses, futons, and Ikea-type furniture made with laminate particle board.

Vietnam Veterans of America

VVA is a national organization that provides services and advocacy for Vietnam veterans. You can schedule a pickup for used small furniture in good condition, as well as many other household items, through the Vietnam Veterans of America. Call 800-459-VETS (8387) or schedule your pickup on their website. They provide pickup service to the greater New York area.

Yeshiva Kol Yaakov

This 501c3 charity provides education on Judaism to Jewish students, adults and families. They will pick up furniture in good condition, although you will need to email them pictures of the items first, along with your phone number. A representative will contact you about your donation and arrange for the pickup and in many areas in Manhattan they can do same-day pick up service.
