In times of crisis, people around the world are known for coming together and helping their fellow citizens out. The current situation with the COVID-19 pandemic is no different! There are many options for donating and volunteering to help out those affected by the coronavirus.
Donating During the Pandemic
If you're looking to donate, there are many organizations that need financial aid in order to better help people affected by the pandemic. Donations do not include just money, as food banks and shelters will be quickly tapped out and need food donations. Likewise, hospitals and the Red Cross are in desperate need of blood donors. Check with your local United Way about organizations that are working specifically with virus victims, as well as local city officials who may be organizing funds for people directly harmed by the pandemic.
Volunteering Opportunities for Coronavirus Victims
If you want to find ways to help out people suffering from the virus, or from the economic downturn, the first thing to do is contact your local Helpline and United Way. Churches and schools are also an excellent source of volunteering information. Some ways people are currently volunteering include:
- Elderly and people with a compromised immune system need help shopping for basic supplies and food.
- Children who normally get their lunches at school need food donated and prepared for them.
- Food banks need extra help preparing meals and handling and sorting the influx of food donations.
- Companies, groups and individuals are organizing food and basic supplies drives in their local communities.
Don't Forget Volunteer Appreciation!
During the next few weeks and months, many people will go out of their way to help out the less fortunate in our communities. Make sure that you let these volunteers know they are appreciated. Nonprofits, no matter how small their budget, can let people know how grateful they are for their assistance in a difficult time, whether it's with a simple handwritten thank you note or a shout-out on social media.
Supporting Others in a Time of Crisis
As scary as the pandemic is, people are already banding together to help others in their community who are suffering from the virus, whether it's because they're sick, or they have lost their job or wages due to the economic slowdown. If you are feeling stressed and anxious about the current situation, getting out to volunteer and donate your time and funds is not only the right thing to do, it's also an excellent way to cope with stress through serving others in need.
